For both of our children, we decided on middle names that derived from nature. Fern is our daughter's middle name and Alder is our son's middle name. We thought there was a nice ring to each. After choosing these names, we came across a unique story that described the link between alder trees and ferns.

Alder trees are very impressive in the amount of life they can support and several species are known to grow on its bark. Because of this, it's also a great environment for ferns to grow. Moist environments in which alders grow aid in the growth of moss, which supports the life and growth of ferns. Trees like Alder dominate on wet soils, while sedges, ferns and mosses flourish on and beneath.
